Colored diamonds
As we like to select the best of the rare, we propose you a selection of fancy colored diamonds : the rarest diamonds in the world. Pink, purple, red, colored diamonds are the rarest gems of the world. Existing in every color of the spectrum, fancy colored diamonds are the most valuable gem on a per carat basis.
- Colored diamonds are so rarely found in nature they are valued at 20 to 25 times the price of the finest quality white diamond.
- For every 100,000 carats of flawless white diamonds found on Earth, only one carat of gem-quality colored diamond is ever found.
- Only the most exquisite natural colored diamonds achieve investment-grade status.
- At the Argyle Mine, for every million carats recovered, only one pink carat qualifies for the prestigious Pink Diamond Tender.
- Colored diamonds, collected by royal dynasties and wealthy connoisseurs, have inspired awe and wonder for centuries.Exceptionally rare natural colored gems will have no fixed price -- As with fine art, their value is determined by their extraordinary rarity and quality.
The series of mines developed in the past century have made colorless diamonds accessible and affordable, with the exception of rare colored diamonds. For every 100,000 of flawless colorless diamonds, only one carat of colored diamond is found. These natural colored gems are as rare today as colorless diamonds were centuries ago. Ancient civilizations believed diamonds had divine origins and used them for religious inspiration. India was the earliest known source for the awe-inspiring gems which were worn and jealously guarded by nobility. As more mines were found on the sub-continent, sea-faring traders seized the opportunity to invest in the rare and precious gems. Louis IX of France, a renowned patron of the arts in Medieval Europe, was enamored by their exotic beauty and decreed that only royalty could own them.
Through fair trade or forced seizure, royal dynasties acquired most of the diamonds from India over subsequent centuries, including the legendary Koh-i-Noor (Mountain of Light) colorless diamond and the mysterious Hope blue diamond. The stones were usually left in their natural state or were shaped with simple cuts until the 17th century, when advanced cutting techniques were introduced to enhance a diamond’s brilliance and fire.
As the masses challenged the notion of divine rule, legends developed around the diamonds worn by ill-fated aristocrats, such as the rare colored diamonds once worn by Marie Antoinette. These historic diamonds are priceless museum pieces today.

Ellis joined the firm and provided capital that was used to establish a branch store in Paris. After the French monarchy was overthrown in 1848, the firm used its new capital to acquire 24 of the 69 French Crown Jewels, and numerous other famous colored diamonds. This bold investment in beauty propelled the little-known firm to international prominence. Tiffany’s image as a luxury retailer was further enhanced when it purchased a 287.42-carat yellow diamond mined in South Africa for $18,000, and put it on public display in its flagship store in New York, where it continues to inspire awe today.
Many of the historic colored gems offered to nobility by these artisan merchants remain in royal collections. Others are museum pieces or in private collections.
